Film vs Digital: Which one is for me?

If you're anything like me, trendy and grainy snapshots have taken over my social media feed. The aesthetic and effortlessness look of film can be appealing to many, but knowing the difference is key in choosing the best medium for your photos.

So what is the difference, and what why should it matter to me?

There are some key differences to know when considering a film session!

-Grain. Love it or hate it, film photos are grainy. A normal 35mm film and even a larger 120 film will show grain in your photos. While film is still sharp, if you prefer clean photos with no grain (keep this in mind when considering large prints) that would be a sign to go for digital.

-Quantity. The number of photos you can take per each roll of film is fixed, a roll of 35mm film will typically get you 36 photos. When shooting digital, the number of photos to take and choose from is almost limitless. A fixed number of photos doesn't give as much flexibility when culling photos. Example: I can take multiple photos of the same scene/pose on digital which allows for me to weed out any awkward shots with closed eyes without losing a photo from my final "roll". If you want the most photos possible, opting for multiple rolls of film or including it as only an add-on will give you the best of both worlds.

-Consistency. Part of why I love film is that I never quite know what to expect when I get a roll developed. Different colors and lighting scenarios present differently through film than they do digitally. If you enjoy a fun surprise with your photos, film may be for you!

Why do I love film?

I fell in love with the experience of shooting film. Without the option to check the screen to see how the photo turned out, film allows me to be more present and forces me to be intentional with each and every photo. Each frame holds so much emotion and feeling, bringing you right back to the moment it was taken. Learning how to shoot and develop my own film and prints really inspired a deeper love of photography. Not knowing exactly how each roll will turn out and being able to learn from that for the next roll is something that keeps photography fresh and exciting for me.
